What Are Cremation Urns?

Cremation urns are receptacles intended to hold the cremated remains, or cremains of the recently deceased. They can be ornate and decorative, intended for public or private display, or they can be more utilitarian. In every case, they’re intended to be a loved one’s final resting place.

Urn Sizes

Urns come in a number of sizes. The size you need depends on the size of the body that was cremated. Cremation urns for human ashes adult large sizes are available for both men and women, as well as smaller urns for children. There are also double urns — also called companion urns, that are intended to contain the remains of two individuals.

If you plan to scatter the deceased’s remains, then no urn is required. Cremains can be provided in a heavy plastic bag inside a sturdy box, or in a scatter tube, for transport to the deceased’s final resting place.

Before selecting a funeral urn, it’s always wise to speak with a funeral professional. They can discuss your options and help you pick the right urn for your purposes and your budget.

Types of Cremation Urns

There are cremation urns for human ashes intended for a number of purposes, and within each category, the styles, materials used, and cost can vary widely. Below are the most common types of cremation urns used.

Decorative Urns

If you plan to create a tasteful memorial in your home, such as a mantle placement, a decorative cremation urn is your best choice. These urns can be made from metal, glass, stone, wood, resin, ceramic and more. Prices can vary from affordable to expensive depending on the materials used, the level of craftsmanship, and the decorative details included.

Decorative urns are intended for public display, and as such are designed for visual appeal. They’re appropriate for home display, as well as use in columbariums and open mausoleums.

Functional Urns

There are instances where those grieving may want a solid, lasting urn, but aren’t concerned about how it looks. These can be used in mausoleums where the urn is interred behind a stone marker, or otherwise can’t be seen, or when it’s buried in a family plot or in an urn garden.

Because the urn is placed in a non-visible location, some people don’t feel the need for added ornamentation, but they still want something solid that will keep the remains of their cherished friend or family member protected.

Specialty Urns

There are also a few urn choices intended for specific applications. These are aren’t intended for permanent display.

Biodegradable Urns

If the deceased is to be buried underground, some people opt for a biodegradable urn. These are made from natural clay, paper, plant fibers, and other materials that break down over time.

Biodegradable urns are a perfect choice if it was the decedent’s wishes to return to nature upon their death, or if the aggrieved prefer the idea of their loved one rejoining the cycle of life over time, instead of remaining in an urn.

Water Soluble Urns

This type of urn is designed to float for a period of time before succumbing to and being consumed by water. This makes a fitting send-off when committing cremated remains into a body of water. The urn will float at the surface while mourners reflect on the life of their loved one, and then have the chance to say their final goodbyes as the urn breaks apart and then sinks into the water.

Pet Cremation Urns

Along with memorial urns for human ashes, you can purchase urns intended for the cremains of cherished pets.
